Halloween Spooky Chess Tournament & Bughouse
Presented by Implodian Chess School LLC
Saturday, October 24, 2026 | 10:00 AM–7:30 PM Eastern

Join us for our annual Halloween Spooky Chess Tournament—a full day of chess, costumes, candy, and friendly competition! Compete in our five-round rated tournament, then team up for bughouse chess and a chance to win cash prizes. Children and adults are welcome!
Wear your favorite Halloween costume—prizes will be awarded for the top two costumes! Candy will be distributed after the main chess tournament.
Main Chess Tournament
Format: Five-round Swiss, USCF regular rated
Time control: G/25; d5 — 25 minutes per player with a five-second delay
Entry fee: $30 per player
Four sections:
- Open: All ages welcome, including adults.
- Under 1100: K–12 scholastic players.
- Under 900: K–12 scholastic players.
- Under 600: K–12 scholastic players.
Discounts are available for Avondale School District students, Detroit City Chess Club participants, and Implodians students.
Trophies: First through fifth place in each section, based on 50 entries.
Bughouse Chess — Team Up for Cash Prizes!
Keep the excitement going after the main tournament with bughouse chess for children and adults!
Separate bughouse entry fee: $20 per player / $40 total per two-player team. Each teammate pays $20 individually.
Choose your section:
- Open: Any two-player team combination is welcome—two adults, an adult and a student, or two students.
- Scholastic (K–12): Both teammates must be K–12 students. This section allows students to compete exclusively against other student teams.
Students may choose either section.
Bughouse prize fund: 60% of each section’s collected bughouse entry fees will be returned to players as cash prizes.
Planned prize distribution in each section:
- First place: 50% of the section’s prize fund.
- Second place: 30% of the section’s prize fund.
- Third place: 20% of the section’s prize fund.
Prizes are awarded per team and shared equally between teammates. Actual prize amounts depend on paid entries.
Example: With 10 fully paid teams in a section, that section’s prize fund would be $240: $120 for first, $72 for second, and $48 for third.

About Me
Mr. Wilson is a three-time title-winning head coach of The Roeper School chess team and award-winning National Chess Championship coach of the Cass Technical High School team. Bryan privately trains top chess students throughout the community, and currently trains 5 of the top 100 chess players in the nation.
